COFIR (Competition for Funding and Redistribution of Opportunities for independent Research) is based on the observation that in fields in which research depends on external funding, previous success in grant acquisition becomes increasingly important for future success, a cycle that is reinforced by performance-based funding at universities rewarding grant acquisition. The project will compare these dependencies and their impact on the independent formulation of research problems in two fields, one that is dominated by a single source of funding (the DFG) and one whose researchers have access to a variety of funding sources.
